Wild Berliner Weisse with Sea Buckthorn
Sandy by Schneeeule is an extraordinary Berliner Weisse, created in collaboration with Brewer’s Tribute from Berlin-Marzahn. The focus is on a fruit rather unusual for beer: sea buckthorn from Brandenburg.
The intensely aromatic berries give Sandy a juicy fruitiness, pronounced tartness, and its unmistakable wild character. Surprisingly, the acidity is not the only prominent feature. The sea buckthorn brings a distinctive tart bitterness, complemented by slightly woody notes.
In the glass, Sandy appears naturally cloudy and golden with a white head. The nose is dominated by fresh sea buckthorn. On the palate, a lively acidity, subtle yeast notes, juicy fruit, and an astonishingly soft mouthfeel follow.
For additional complexity, Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces, and Lactobacillus are used. The result is a wild, fruity, and characterful Berliner Weisse far removed from ordinary fruit beers.
