Pauwel Kwak from the Belgian Brouwerij Bosteels is one of the great classics of the Belgian beer world. This bold amber ale combines an intense malt base with fruity yeast aromas, subtle spice and a pleasant warmth.

With its deep amber to copper-red colour, Kwak already makes an impression in the glass. Perhaps even more famous than the beer itself is the traditional Kwak glass with its distinctive wooden holder.

How it tastes

Kwak presents itself as full-bodied, malty and pleasantly complex. Notes of caramel, malt and ripe fruit take centre stage, accompanied by the typically Belgian, lightly spicy yeast character.

There are also hints of dried fruit, banana and a subtle sweetness, while a restrained bitterness keeps the beer balanced despite its strength.

At 8.4% vol., Kwak is definitely no lightweight. The alcohol is noticeable, but blends well into the bold body and the malty-fruity aromatics.

Pairs with

Thanks to its bold, slightly sweet character, Kwak pairs excellently with heartier dishes, braised meats, strong cheeses or Belgian classics.

It also works beautifully with caramelised or lightly sweet dishes, as the malt aromas pick up on these flavour notes nicely.

Or the classic way: pour it slightly less cold than a Pils and simply enjoy it at leisure.
