The Great Trappist Classic from Belgium
The Chimay Grande Réserve, also known as Chimay Blue, is the strongest of the classic Chimay Trappist beers. Originally brewed as a Christmas beer, it has long since become one of Belgium's best-known strong beers.
At 9% ABV, it presents itself dark, full-bodied and wonderfully complex. In the aroma, ripe dark fruit, caramel and spicy notes meet the characteristic Belgian yeast character. Fine hints of chocolate and roasted malt round it out.
On the palate, the Grande Réserve is powerful and warming, yet remarkably well balanced. Fruity and malty sweetness is accompanied by a subtle bitterness. The bottle conditioning adds further complexity and makes this beer especially interesting for cellaring.
The 0.75 l bottle is particularly well suited for sharing – or for laying down and discovering later. As it matures, the aromas can develop further, moving even more toward dried fruit, sherry and port wine.
